When it comes to making a home senior friendly, there are quite a few changes that need to be considered. The following tips can help individuals in this situation.

The first area to look at is the pathways into the home. Look at the sidewalks, driveway, and entrance way of the home. If there are cracks or uneven surfaces, this can create danger zones. It may be necessary to smooth the surfaces and add nonslip flooring in the entrance way to make it safe for elderly individuals. It may be necessary to install ramps or rails if there are stairs going up to the home.

The next area to look at is the bathroom. Safe and accessible bathrooms do not just happen. You need to put some forethought into making the bathroom and shower area safe for seniors. Slips and falls can happen in the bathroom area because of water and humidity. Nonskid bath mats or strips can be used to prevent falls and accidents. Make sure that these are sturdy and of high quality. Grab bars and rails may also need to be installed next to the toilet or in the shower or tub. You can make a bath time a time of peace and quiet for a senior individual by doing improvements, like a bathtub to shower conversion if necessary.

Another area to consider is the kitchen. Making this a senior friendly area may also add to the decor of the room. Think about how a person’s manual dexterity changes as they age. A couple of things that you may consider include switching to appliances that have easy push buttons or converting to a swing or wall oven. It may be a good idea to change to open shelving or to use glass cabinet doors so that it is easier to identify certain items without a lot of effort.

It is good to look at the faucets that are in the kitchen as well as the bathroom. Make sure that the pressure of the water is steady. Also, revise the water heater to make sure that it is set at a comfortable temperature that will not cause burning or scalding. Take time to insulate any exposed pipes that carry hot water. It may be a good idea to install pedal controlled faucets as opposed to using a normal kitchen lever or turn faucet.

These are just a few ideas to help you make your home as senior friendly as possible.
